CSB Changes Student Body

Since September of last year, members of the Center for the Study of Boys Advisory Board have been attending the Masculinity in a Changing World forum at the University of Richmond. The talks revolve around the concept of being a man and how that is affected by today’s realities. The university’s Jepson School of Leadership hosts this forum, inviting prominent speakers such as Richard Reeves, the President of the American Institute for Boys and Men and author of Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why It Matters, And What to Do About It. The members of the board are encouraged to attend, alongside a select group of six members appointed as ambassadors to the program.
The Center for the Study of Boys is a school-based student and teacher collaboration “designed to help students, teachers, [and] educators from other schools to learn more about growing boys into men” according to Dr. Hudson, director of the program. It focuses on the development of strategies and approaches that are suitable specifically for boys. The teacher side of the organization conducts studies and manages the logistics, while the student side, on the other hand, works on programming and selecting speakers to invite for chapel and X Period. The CSB strives to become a global thought leader in teaching boys, allowing for partnerships with other boys schools around the world, such as Christchurch from New Zealand who visited earlier this year.
It was a straightforward choice once the board learned of the talks occurring a mere five minutes away from St. Christopher’s. “This allowed students to access something they usually wouldn’t have in high school,” Dr. Hudson said, referring to the differing perspectives on masculinity the boys are able to access through the speaker series. Alongside this, she hopes for a trickle down effect from these talks.
