Not many teachers get the opportunity to reconnect with their students after graduating from their primary education. This is what makes Mrs. Jen O’Ferrall’s situation so unique. With 27 years of teaching experience under her belt, she now joins the Upper School and meets regularly with the same boys she once taught in the Lower School.
Mrs. O’Ferrall works in Chamberlain Hall through the Center for the Study of Boys, a schoolwide initiative that focuses on the best practices in engaging with boys through research, professional development and programming. She said, “This space is designed to be an inviting, open, and safe environment where students can seek help with organization, understanding difficult topics, developing study habits or simply finding a quiet place to study.” In addition, she stresses the need to excel in your education as part of the investment made by your parents in sending you to STC.
Having sent three sons through the Upper School, Mrs. O’Ferrall is well-versed in the challenges and experiences that boys face. Her passion is obvious through her dedication to the CSB: “we want to help boys learn, no matter the subject or the difficulty, from Calculus to Algebra,” she said.
In her personal life, Mrs. O’Ferrall enjoys running, watching sports and spending time outdoors. Along with cheering for the Saints, she roots for her son, Griffin O’Ferrall ’21, who plays shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles. All of these activities help her stay connected with the community, especially now that her children are grown.
Mrs. O’Ferrall is eager to engage with the school community and encourages students to say hello in the hallways, at sports events and other school activities. Her warm and supportive nature, along with her clear passion for boys’ learning, make her a valuable addition to the Upper School.
