A Q&A with Nurse Ash

Greyson Wilborn '28
How busy does the clinic get?

“Last school year, (2023-2024) I had 2,628 clinic visits. This year, I’ve documented 156 from just the first twelve days of school. Mornings are generally less busy; recess & in-between classes are busier.”

What does your day look like?

“I love being at school because each day is different. From injuries to not feeling well, my day can vary. I work most with Middle School students but am also the nurse for the Upper School.”

“My degree from Virginia Tech was in human food & exercise. I try to do something active every day and enjoy working out and cooking.”

How do you stay organized?

“Organization and multitasking are skills vital to nursing. We have a health records system for documenting and tracking visits. This helps me keep health records organized. The clinic may be small, but we are fortunate to have a lot of important supplies & medical equipment to help students.”

What do you do for fun?

“I love playing tennis, walking our chocolate lab Tito, and spending time with my family. I enjoy cooking as well.”

What is your background in nursing?

“I’ve worked in many different areas of nursing, and school nursing is my favorite. I received a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing from VCU. I’ve worked as a trauma nurse (RN), in physical medicine, rehabilitation and wound care as a family nurse practitioner.”

What is one secret talent you have?

“I don’t need a cookbook or recipe to make most things. I enjoy putting ingredients together for a fun meal. We have a large extended family, and I love to host big family meals and get really into holidays and celebrating! This summer I made a goal to try to master sourdough bread. I had many failed attempts and many successful ones!”
